Normal reading makes your eyes move across every line. FocusPoint keeps words in one place so your eyes stay locked on a single focus point — letting you read faster without losing your spot.

A free online speed reader you can use right now

FocusPoint Reader is a free, browser-based speed reading tool. Paste any article, essay, or set of notes and it streams the text through a single focus point so your eyes stop jumping across the page. No sign up, no download, no cloud — just paste and read.

How it works

Three reading modes built around a single fixed focus point.

ORP Red-Letter

reading

One word at a time, with one letter highlighted in red and locked to a fixed center guide.

Classic RSVP

one word at a time

Flash one or more words at a time in the same place. Adjust chunk size to taste.

Hybrid Chunk

the quick brown fox

Small chunks of 2–4 words with a red focus letter on the middle word.

FAQ

A few quick answers.

What is ORP?+

ORP stands for Optimal Recognition Point. It's the single letter your eye naturally locks onto when reading a word. FocusPoint highlights that letter in red so your eyes can rest in one spot while words flow through it.

Is my text saved?+

No. Your text stays in your browser only and is never sent anywhere. It's wiped when you close the tab unless you turn on 'Remember pasted text on this device' in settings.

What WPM should I start with?+

250–350 WPM is a comfortable starting range. Move up to 400–500 once you feel steady. Above 500 is mostly for skimming. Slow down for unfamiliar or technical material.

Is this useful for studying?+

Yes. Speed reading helps you skim large amounts of material, then re-read carefully. Use slower speeds and shorter chunks for dense study material, and pause to summarize after each paragraph.

Speed reading guides

Short, plain-English explainers about how speed reading works.

What is RSVP reading?

RSVP stands for Rapid Serial Visual Presentation. Instead of moving your eyes across a line of text, the words come to you — one or a few at a time — flashing in the same place on screen.

Because your eyes don't have to jump from word to word, you cut out the small movements (saccades) that normally slow reading down. Most people can comfortably read 1.5–2× faster with RSVP after a few minutes of practice.

FocusPoint's RSVP mode lets you choose how many words flash at a time (the chunk size) so you can match the pace to the difficulty of the text.

What is ORP reading?

ORP stands for Optimal Recognition Point. Inside every word there is a single letter your eye naturally locks onto when recognizing the word — usually slightly left of center.

FocusPoint highlights that letter in red and aligns it to a fixed center guide. Each new word lands with its focus letter exactly where your eyes are already looking, so reading feels effortless and your gaze barely moves.

ORP works especially well for longer or unfamiliar words, because it gives your brain a consistent visual anchor on every flash.

Best WPM for speed reading

Most adults read 200–300 WPM (words per minute) on paper. With a speed reader, here's a rough guide:

  • 250–350 WPM — comfortable for everyday reading.
  • 350–450 WPM — fast, but trainable within a session.
  • 450–600 WPM — confident readers and easy material.
  • 600+ WPM — mostly skimming and previewing.

Start at a speed where you understand at least 90% of what you read. When that feels easy, raise the WPM by 25–50 and continue. Slow down for dense, technical, or unfamiliar text.

Speed reading for students

Speed readers are a great study tool when used the right way. They aren't a replacement for careful reading — they're a way to preview, review, and re-read material quickly.

  • Preview chapters at 400–500 WPM to map the structure.
  • Read carefully at 250–350 WPM, pausing to summarize.
  • Review notes at 350–450 WPM the day before exams.
  • Re-read tricky passages with shorter chunks and lower WPM.

Because FocusPoint runs entirely in your browser and never saves your text, it's safe to paste class notes, drafts, and study material.
